My Recovery Story
Hi, I’m Joshua Parker, the founder of the Parker Group. My story is one of triumph, but it wasn’t always that way. I grew up in a small town along the Rust Belt of Central NY, where alcohol was part of the fabric of life for many. By the age of 15, Alcohol had already become a part of how I defined myself. Nearly everyone I knew consumed copious amounts of alcohol as a matter of course. I would likely still be sitting behind a bar in my hometown today if it weren’t for developing some empowering life skills at a young age. Meditation, exercise, and hard work were all things that I could do to quiet my inner anxiety. When I wasn’t doing one of those three things, I was drinking to numb it. Those skills, along with an unquenchable desire to build and create, kept me motivated and driven to succeed. However, 30 years of my life were marked by a severe addiction to alcohol.
The Wake Up Call
In 2010, my best friend lost his battle with Alcoholism. Brian died before his thirty-ninth birthday. With his passing, my struggle to quit began in earnest. Like many who have struggled with addiction, nothing I tried seemed to work. Within a year, I had once again resigned myself to a life of dependence. However, several years later, my first son, Vinny, was born, followed by my second son, Charlie, a year later. I looked down at them one night, dreaming of the men they would become, and wondered if I would even be around to see it. I had once again found the leverage I needed to quit, but how would I make it stick this time?
Enter Neurofeedback
With Neurofeedback, individuals can learn to shift their brains into more stable and regulated states. For example, increasing SMR (sensory motor rhythm) activity can promote a state of calmness, a clear mind, balanced emotions, collectively reducing cravings and anxiety. Lowering the magnitude of high beta bands can decrease agitation and improve impulse control. The brain gains improved resilience to stress, and the person can make thoughtful decisions and resist urges. These factors are critical for a sustained recovery. These tools have worked for me and continue to work for many of my clients. WE ARE HERE TO HELP.
If you would like to meet with me personally to discuss using Neurofeedback as a tool to combat addiction, please call me (850) 312-5531 or schedule a free evaluation. I will go over the process in detail.
