A Functional Neurofeedback Approach
What is functional neurofeedback?
Envisioned by Jeffery Bland (Bland, 2018;2019a), “Functional medicine seeks to treat the source of the patient’s problems rather than treating the symptoms. Functional medicine is less concerned with the dysfunction of a disease and more concerned with the dynamic processes that create disease. Disease is a descriptor of a pathological endpoint, and function is about the sources of the pathological process and how it is shaped by multiple causal factors in a biological system.” Functional Neurofeedback seeks to treat the source of symptoms through QEEG Brain mapping diagnostics, operant conditioning with Neurofeedback training, and focused attention to Bio-Psycho-Social confounds, including physiological drivers of symptoms.
The Parker Group Method
At The Parker Group, we have found that the QEEG MAP provides valuable insights into what is happening on a global level within the individual. This information allows us to see patterns of breakdown that correlate with the reported psychological symptoms. The Parker Group focuses on using the information obtained through the QEEG brain map and a comprehensive Bio-psych-social questionnaire to determine the causation of symptoms. Neurofeedback training alone offers a robust, drug-free approach to treating the symptoms of many psychological disorders. However, like everything, neurofeedback has its limitations.
In most cases, we can achieve great success with direct treatment using neurofeedback training. However, in other cases, symptoms may be significantly impacted by physiological issues. In these cases, we refer individuals to several qualified nutritional experts for support in those areas in concert with our Neurofeedback Training.
All our clients’ journeys begin with a QEEG Brain Map. One of the problems with conventional methods of treating disorders is that a variety of dysfunctions can generate the same symptomology. Therefore, it’s vital to get a “snapshot” of what is happening in the “control center” or the Brain. A QEEG offers us just that, a snapshot of what is happening in the control center. Once we have that, we can refine a neurofeedback strategy to help resolve the symptoms at hand. At the same time, we help educate our clients on lifestyle and nutrition strategies to make sure the neurofeedback work is supported on a physiological level.
